The Lions Club of Rio Linda's 8th Annual
3rd Grade Reading Challenge

Because it has been determined that reading is essential for learning Reading is the most crucial academic skill because it is the foundation for learning. Through third grade children are learning to read; after third grade students read to learn. Without a strong foundation in reading, children are left behind at the beginning of their education. The Lions Club of Rio Linda began promoting literacy in 3rd Graders at Dry Creek, Orchard West Side and Elverta Elementary schools 9 years ago (with one year Missing due to Covid).

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, the Lions Club of Rio Linda will present a ticket to students for every book read at the student’s reading level with a score of 80% or above on the comprehension test. This ticket gives the student an opportunity to win a Kindle Fire. The students can earn as many tickets as possible during the challenge

One Kindle, possibly 2 will be awarded to each third grade class during the first week of April or when convenient for the classroom.

To help jump start the challenge, the Lions Club of Rio Linda is working to earn the funds to provide a book to each participant to keep for their very own. One of the fundraiser we are hosting is Bunco for Books
